Un and Underinsured Motorist coverage in Missouri is a very important coverage. No it does NOT cover your car if it's damaged by an uninsured driver or hit an run. It protects the insured driver and occupants for their injuries and loss of income. If an uninsured driver causes an accident leaving other driver and occupants severely injured a person's only recourse for help maybe through their own auto insurance policy under the Un/Underinsured Motorist or Umbrella policy provided it includes Un/Underinsured Motorist. Adding Un/Underinsured Motorist to an umbrella policy can cost over $100/yr.
People who carry state minimum liability limits(25/50/10) are NOT eligible for the Underinsured Motorist Coverage. In order to obtain Underinsured Motorist a policyholder must carry 50/100/25 liability limits or HIGHER. In Missouri, a policyholder can MATCH the auto liability limits and Un/Underinsured Motorist Limits. This is not mandatory; however, highly advisable.
If a policyholder carries 25/50/25 liability limits they can not have higher Un/Underinsured motorist limits, they must carry the minimum 25/50 uninsured motorist limit. If a policyholder carries 100/300/100 liability limits it is "recommended" they have" 100/300 Un/Underinsured Motorist. If a policyholder has a $1 Million umbrella policy, I'd recommend including $1 Million Un/Underinsured Motorist to the Umbrella policy. Keep in mind, if driver or passenger is paralyzed or perishes in an auto accident the cost of medical care, rehab and loss of income will be well more than 1 million.
