I am answering this in a general kind of way, as Missouri uses Auto Medical Payments not Personal Injury Protection(PIP). Medical payments is an optional coverage in Missouri, the options are typically $1,000, $2000, $5000 or $10,000. Medical payments pays for the driver and occupants of the car's medical payments from a car accident. This includes getting into or out of a car. I find about half the clients want some kind of medical payments, while the other half is sure their health insurance will take care of it.
PIP not only covers medical payments to the driver and occupants of the car but also provides lost wages and some other essential benefits. It may be that PIP is for states with "no fault" auto insurance rules and medical is for non-no fault states.
So the medical payments and PIP are similar; however yet different.
