If a total loss occurs, tornado/fire, and you have insurance protecting for the loss an insurance company will need to "WHAT HAVE YOU LOST". It will be up to you to fill out forms and that can be time consuming. I can imagine most people do not have a personal inventory of the items they have; therefore, I suggest opening up closests, cabinets and taking photos. Take photos of rooms, including garage, to help you visualize what you have in the rooms and perhaps place the pictures in "the cloud" or on various devices.
Most insurance companies offer on line inventory checklist or perhaps going to Missouri Division of Insurance website. https://insurance.mo.gov/consumers/home/documents/HomeInventoryChecklist.pdf
