February is earthquake awareness month and a reminder to check and be sure your homeowner, condo, rental home or renter policy includes this valuable coverage. For the policyholder who has a mortgage the coverage should be mandatory; however, it is not. In Missouri we do live in earthquake zone and the coverage is so important.
If you have a mortgage and the big one shakes your home down to it's foundation your earthquake policy responds by providing coverage for damage to the house, any other structures, your personal belongings. Say you do NOT have earthquake then you have NO coverage for damage to house, stuff inside the house and your mortgage company will NOT forgive your balance owed.
Earthquake policies have a separate deductible this ranges from 10-20%, this may appear steep; however, no coverage means you have a 100% deductible.
