Earthquake coverage can only be a covered loss if added onto your homeowner policy. All standard homeowner policies EXCLUDE earthquake coverage; however, many insurance companies will allow the coverage added by special endorsement/rider, similar to adding sewer back up, itemized jewelry or Identity theft. Unfortunately, in Missouri, many homeowner companies will permit adding earthquake providing the home was built after 1960.
The U.S. Geological Survey(U.S.G.S) reports some 200,000 earthquakes in the U.S. per year reaching 42 states. Further, a 2014 Insurance Information Institute reports only 7% of homeowners across the country have earthquake coverage.
My advice is, if the coverage is available from your insurance company, include it on your homeowner policy. ANY questions please contact the Flanigan Insurance Agency @ 314-727-6000.
