I have seen many insurance companies Non-Renew homeowner policy due to 2 small claims. I advise is to not report a claim unless you know it's an expensive claim, such as a hail loss. Before I would report a hail loss to an insurance company I would check with a qualified roofer to be sure there is plenty of damage. The reason is why report and have a loss on your 5 year claim report unless you expect a payout.
I find the majority of homeowner companies will not renew a policy with more than 3 losses in past 5 years. Plus majority of companies will begin surcharging the rates for a loss other than hail, such as wind, smoke, fire etc. What once upon a time was a $3000 hail loss is now a $8-15,000 hail loss when you factor damage to siding. in the 1970's very few homes had vinyl siding, most were wood or brick and majority of claims were simply for roof and gutters. Now claims are to roof and siding costing thousands more; therefore, what insurance company in their right mind would want to stay on a risk that continually has claims?
So if another type of minor claim occurs do your best to simply handle yourself and save any claims for large or catastrophic loss. If you need further information or a quote please contact Flanigan Insurance Agency at 314-727-6000.
